On this date in 1814, Francis Scott Key penned a poem which was later set to music and in 1931 became America's national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner." The poem was written after Key witnessed the fort being bombarded by the British during the #Warof1812.
On this day in 1813, the U.S. gots its nickname, Uncle Sam. The name is linked to Samuel Wilson, a meat packer who supplied beef to the Army during the War of 1812. He stamped the barrels with “U.S.” for United States, but soldiers began referring to the grub as “Uncle Sam’s.”
In March 1913, the Miami Valley experienced a destructive flood. Here is a photo of the Overfield Tavern during the flood. The Overfield is the building on the right in the background. The brick buildings on the left were part of the Hayner Distillery complex, now gone.
